This is the story of Roe. A story that will make you doubt humanity and then prove to you that it still exists.
Roe is from Georgia. Where he was seized as evidence in a dog fighting bust. He found himself in an overflowing, high kill shelter. A shelter he would die in if he didn't find placement in a rescue.
Then something special happened… Roe has this way about him that draws people to him and makes you fall in love. Lucky for him, that happened with a shelter volunteer down in Georgia. She would stop at nothing to free him, to give him a shot at a way out. She finally found our little program in South Dakota, got in contact with SEPR, and when a foster home opened up, she put him on a plane.
We knew this dog must be pretty special, for someone to work so hard to save his life. We had seen videos and pictures of him. Had read emails describing him. We actually knew more about him than a lot of the dogs we pull from shelters. But yet, we had no idea. When she said that he was special, we thought "yeah, yeah, but they're all special. That IS why we do this after all." But she knew something we didn't, because we hadn't met him yet.
Roe is magnetic. He is sweet and chill, but funny and quirky. He will melt your heart with his crooked smile and you don't even know why you can't stop loving on him. He melts into your affection. It's not pushy or that classic pitbull lean. It's like he physically melts into you when you place your hand on his neck. He can't get enough of your love and he gives it back to you a million times over.
He is proving to be the perfect house guest. He picked up house rules extremely quickly. No accidents since his very first day. He sleeps quietly in his crate and will go in willingly as long as you make sure there is peanut butter in his kong. He loves to play with all of his new toys, but is absolutely content to lay beside you on his dog bed.
Did we mention he is quirky? Haha. You have to meet him to understand that we mean this in the most amazing way. This Georgia boy has shocked us with his love of the snow. He bounces and burrows like a bunny! As the temps in South Dakota continue to drop Roe hasn’t noticed at all. Maybe that has something to do with the few extra pounds he is carrying around. He is weighing in at a whopping 55lbs, which for his frame makes him look a bit like a Thanksgiving turkey. But foster mom is working on that! A little scarring makes for his adorable Elvis lip and he has a wonky front ankle from a former injury that was never set properly. The ankle doesn't seem to bother him at all and he loves to run up and down stairs or do zoomies in the yard.
He is the class clown of the house. Ok, he is the class clown of pretty much any situation he gets put in which means he is quick to make friends or entertain a crowd. He recently learned “lay down” and “roll over”… which he has been putting to good use while making sure all eyes are on him. Call him a show off but we call him one smart cookie. Roe knows “sit”, “uhuh”, “wait”, and is practicing “get back”, “shake”, “lay down”, and “roll over.”
Roe's story may touch your heart. You might hear us tell you he is special. But. I promise you this, you have no idea. You can't know. Because you haven't met him yet.
