about BLUEBIRD
Throughout time and many cultures, bluebirds have been seen as a symbol of hope and joy. To some, they were considered a sign that good news would soon be arriving. The Sioux Empire Pit Rescue has their own “Bluebird of Happiness”. Instead of flying, our little Bluebird came to South Dakota via a twenty-two hour drive that began in Hazelhurst, Georgia.
Bluebird has spent ¾ of her life in a small rural animal shelter. She had been adopted as a puppy, but when the husband of her adoptive family passed away, she was returned to the shelter. In spite of this, Bluebird loves to be with people. To her, people are the bringers of happiness and joy. She loves belly rubs and ear scratches, the treats and the toys, and mostly THE FOOD. True bluebirds typically eat 12% of their body weight daily. This is the equivalent of a 200 lb person eating 24 lbs of food a day! When rescued, SEPR Bluebird had been eating “like a bird” and was in need of a diet. With a decrease in the amount of kibble she receives daily, and the addition of veggies and exercise that she was unable to get in a shelter kennel, she is well on her way to an ideal weight.
But her enjoyment of food is actually a positive trait. It means that she is food motivated and that makes training easier. Bluebird is completely house-trained. She has the “sit” command mastered, but is working on the “wait” and “stay” parts. She is so happy to have your attention, that she finds it difficult to sit still. Having not spent much time as a house-pet, a large part of her training will be to learn what is acceptable behavior in a home.
In her foster home, she is currently working on her house-pet etiquette and integration with her canine foster brother. She is dog friendly, and spent much of her trip to South Dakota curled up in the front seat with SEPR Walle.
Bluebird is new to SEPR. As her foster family gets to know her, more information will be added to this page. Please check back for updates on this rare bird!
