about GUSTAV

A small boy with a big personality, Gustav has already endured more loss than most dogs experience in a lifetime. One of our Hurricane Helene dogs, he survived months outdoors in pens during a devastating natural disaster after being surrendered to a rural Georgia shelter. In the midst of all that chaos, he also lost both of his beloved canine sisters when their family could no longer care for the three dogs. For such a young soul, that kind of loss leaves a mark.

Known affectionately as Goose, Gustav is a shy pup whose gentle nature reflects the life he’s lived so far. While the world can still feel overwhelming to him at times, his playful spirit continues to shine through as he heals and learns what safety truly feels like. He approaches life with the curiosity and energy of a puppy, balanced by a thoughtful, cautious heart.

Gustav is potty trained, walks beautifully on a leash, and does well with other dogs and even cats when introductions are done slowly and intentionally. Because he is naturally wary of strangers, he isn’t the dog who wants to be the center of attention or the life of the party. Instead, he thrives in calm environments and relies heavily on a confident canine companion to help guide him through new situations and reassure him that the world is not so scary.

In his foster home, Gustav loves playing with his canine sisters, zooming around with surprising speed for such short legs, and then settling in with a Nylabone or antler. When the energy fades, he’s just as content snoozing nearby while his people work or relax. Walks are a joy for him, and while he’s still learning to fully embrace his Gentle Leader, it helps him stay focused when he feels uncertain. He’s happy to grab a toy from the toy box and entertain himself, and he enjoys a good game of fetch when you’re available.

Gustav currently lives with a teenager, a preteen, two dogs, and three cats, and he loves the attention of his entire household. He sleeps through the night in his kennel, does well when crated during the workday, and has never had an accident. Before kennel time, he enjoys enrichment like lick mats or pupsicles to help him settle, then rests deeply. Because he’s a smart boy, food puzzles and mental enrichment are important for keeping his busy brain satisfied.

Training has been a bright spot in Gustav’s journey. With those big airplane ears, he picks up cues quickly, especially when treats are involved. He knows sit, wait, down, settle, come, go outside, middle, stay, and leave it, and he’s been attending Saturday classes at Big Paw Canine Training, where his confidence continues to bloom. He even sings and dances with excitement at mealtime.

At home, Gustav loves to play, lounge in sunny spots, snooze on the couch, or sprawl out on the deck in a perfect sploot. Baths and nail trims are easy with the help of tasty distractions, and cuddles are very much his love language once trust is established.

Gustav is searching for a home that understands healing takes time. He will need an adopter willing to move at his pace, offering patience, consistency, and gentle leadership. A confident canine companion would be ideal to help him continue building confidence. Once inside his trust bubble, Gustav transforms into a hilarious, affectionate little comedian, a loyal shadow with a huge heart.

With stability, compassion, and the space to grow, this sweet, resilient boy is ready to write a much softer next chapter.
