about RANGER
From heartbreak to healing, Ranger’s story is one of quiet resilience and second chances. Found bloodied and hairless on the side of an interstate, Ranger’s body bore the brutal marks of neglect and abuse — whether from dog fighting, backyard breeding, or pure disregard, we’ll never fully know. What we do know is that his past does not define him.

After a week of recovery at a veterinary clinic, Ranger made his way to Sioux Empire Pit Rescue and into the home of a foster who saw beyond the scars. With steady love, structure, and time, this 63-pound sweetheart has blossomed into a kind, curious, and eager-to-please companion who’s leaving his painful past behind with every passing day.

Today, Ranger is thriving. His skin infections are healed, his beautiful coat has grown back in, and he’s traded fear for trust. While he can be a bit reserved at first, once he knows you’re safe, he leans right in — both physically and emotionally. He keeps his kennel clean, has had no accidents in the house, and enjoys the simple things: lounging after a walk, chewing on a Kong, or riding shotgun on a car ride, quietly watching the world go by.

Ranger recently completed our Train-a-Bull program, working closely with a new volunteer — and impressing everyone with how quickly he picks up on commands. He’s highly food-motivated, making continued training and bonding a joy. He’s also a champ during bath time and nail trims, proving that even big boys can be gentle souls.

When it comes to other animals, Ranger shows great promise. He’s displayed positive social skills around dogs and could do well with the right canine companion after slow, structured introductions. During cat testing, he was initially curious, but with redirection (and a few hot dogs!), he quickly disengaged — suggesting he could succeed in a feline-friendly home with strong leadership and proper boundaries.
Though he doesn't live with children, Ranger has interacted with families at events and visits. He remains calm and relaxed, unfazed by the noise and energy of little ones — a testament to his gentle nature. That said, we always encourage respectful behavior around dogs of any size.

What Ranger needs most now is a home that understands trust is earned, and that love paired with routine and guidance can work wonders. A fenced yard would be a bonus for this playful boy, as would a companion dog to share his new life with — though he’d be just as happy soaking up attention as your one and only.

Ranger is living proof that even the most broken hearts can heal with the right people beside them. He’s ready for forever. Could that be with you?
