about REMEDY
Remedy’s name says a lot about where he came from, but it doesn’t begin to tell you who he is.

When Remedy was found in Georgia, he was lying in a carport nearly dead. He was severely emaciated, terrified, injured and unable to walk. His condition was so serious that euthanasia was recommended, but Remedy was given a chance, and this little dog has spent every day since showing us exactly what he intends to do with it.

In less than two months, Remedy has gained significant weight, gone from being unable to walk to getting himself around independently and begun learning that people can be safe. When he first arrived in foster care, he spent nearly a week and a half hesitant to leave the security of his room. Today, he comes looking for his foster family every chance he gets, explores more of his surroundings and is becoming increasingly playful, curious and full of shenanigans.

We are finally getting to know the dog underneath everything he survived, and Remedy is pretty darn special. He is gentle and affectionate, enjoys being near his people and has developed a serious appreciation for all things soft and comfortable. Blankets and towels are apparently worth stealing, and the recliner his foster used while sitting with him during his first frightened days has become Remedy’s favorite piece of furniture. When he wants a little extra attention, he’ll even break out an old hound-dog howl that has quickly become one of his more endearing quirks.

Remedy is smart, food motivated and already knows several basic commands. House training is still a work in progress, and there are pieces of everyday life that remain unfamiliar or intimidating to him, particularly leashes and some handling equipment. But instead of shutting down, Remedy continues making progress. His confidence is growing, he is beginning to enjoy exploring outside and he is learning the routines that come with simply being somebody’s dog.

He has also shown us that he enjoys the company of other animals. Remedy is dog social and has done well around cats, even attempting to convince his foster’s cat that they should play together. He has remained calm with visitors as well and continues to show the wonderfully gentle nature we first saw underneath all that fear.

Physically, Remedy still has a road ahead of him. He is approximately six years old and around 50 pounds, with a little more healthy weight still to gain. His body shows evidence of significant past trauma, particularly to his right front leg and spine. His veterinary team continues to evaluate his orthopedic needs, and amputation of his injured front leg may ultimately give him the best quality of life. He is also heartworm positive and will be completing treatment through SEPR.

Remedy’s adopter will need to understand that his future may look a little different from that of the average dog. He will need someone patient enough to continue building his confidence, committed to helping him learn and willing to make whatever accommodations his body ultimately requires. What he does not need is someone to feel sorry for him.

Because Remedy is moving forward.

The frightened dog who once wouldn’t leave his room is now seeking out his people, stealing their blankets, asking for attention, learning household routines and discovering more of his world every day. As his body gets stronger and his confidence grows, we are seeing more and more of the funny, affectionate little character who was buried underneath years of neglect and trauma.

Remedy was given a second chance at life. Now he needs someone ready to show him just how good that life can be.
