Named after the iconic Thomas Shelby from Peaky Blinders, this resilient pup is living proof that a rough beginning can lead to a beautiful new chapter.

Shelby’s story starts in Georgia, where he was taken in by a compassionate shelter staff member who saw hope in his eyes, despite his fragile frame and emotional wounds. He arrived severely emaciated, covered in scars—both visible and invisible. But even then, his gentle heart still had room for trust and love. Today, Shelby is thriving, thanks to care, compassion, and his own unbreakable spirit.

Though he’s made huge strides, the trauma of starvation left its mark. Shelby can be a little too curious about what’s edible, so it’s important to keep an eye on him and ensure he doesn’t have access to anything he shouldn’t chew. On top of that, Shelby came to us heartworm positive—but we’re thrilled to report he’s now heartworm free and healthier than ever!

Shelby is still a young guy with a zest for life. He needs plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to keep his tail wagging. That said, he’s not all energy—after a fun-filled day, he’s more than happy to curl up beside you on the couch or snuggle in with his foster brother, Klaus. He plays well with his doggy friends, though he does prefer not to share his toys—easy fix! Just feed separately and keep toys put away when not supervised.

Routine is new for Shelby, and while he’s not the biggest fan of his kennel just yet, he’s working hard on it. He’s already made progress with help from training sessions with our friends at Nerdy K9 and a little medication to ease the transition. A home with an active lifestyle—and perhaps someone who works from home—would be ideal for him as he continues learning and growing.

Shelby is quickly becoming a social superstar! He’s rocked SEPR’s big events and even strutted proudly in this year’s Pride Parade. He loves people of all ages and has proven himself a true gentleman with cats, too!

​

Car rides, bath time, neighborhood walks—no problem! Bring out the hose, and Shelby's all in for a splash session. He’s a happy-go-lucky guy with a goofy streak, always ready to be your partner in crime, cuddle buddy, or office assistant.
